Saltire Awards
Saltire Awards is the Scottish Governments national youth volunteer awards.
As part of our S6 enhancement programme, pupils have the opportunity to achieve a Saltire Award.
Our S6 enhancement programme allows pupils to opt into a range of activities to enhance their skill set on preparation for leaving school.
Activities can include:
- S1/2 class assistant
- library assistant
- department assistant
- assisting with the school website
- mentoring S1 pupils in cooperation with our Support for Learning Department
- mentoring pupils with additional support needs in cooperation with our ASN
- Department -buddying S1/2 pupils -
- working in a primary placement
- working in a nursery placement
Where possible enhancement activities are mapped into the career destination of each S6 pupil.
Pupils either assist during morning registration, interval or lunch. They can also assist during one or more of their private study periods. Training is given prior to participation in our enhancement programme.
The school regards participation in the programme as a volunteering commitment. Participating allow pupils to ‘bank’ volunteering hours. On completion of 10 hours they qualify for a Saltire Award.
The Saltire Award scheme is overseen and accredited by the Scottish Government. The programme celebrates and recognises a commitment by young people to volunteering – endorsing this achievement by means of a formal certificate.
Calderside are heavily involved in the programme and are a flagship school for Saltire within SLC. Each session we have an S6 Saltire Awards Ceremony to mark the achievements of our S6 volunteers. The contribution of our S6 pupils, via our enhancement programme, to the ethos of the school is significant both for the school and those pupils involved.
