Transitions

 Primary Transition

Our Primary Transition program is designed to help pupils make a smooth and confident transition from our feeder primary schools to life at Calderside Academy. We focus on fostering a welcoming and supportive environment where students feel valued and excited to embark on their learning journey. The program includes tailored interactive family lessons, school tours, and regular communication with parents and guardians to ensure every child’s individual needs are met.

Our dedicated staff works closely with students and families to address any concerns, provide essential information about school routines, and encourage a positive, inclusive start to school life. Through this approach, we aim to build a strong foundation for academic success, social development, and personal growth.

Enhanced Transition

At Calderside Academy we recognise that some pupils require additional support to ensure that their journey to secondary school is smooth and empowering. From the first day they join us to their final steps pupils who participate in our Enhanced Transition programme experience bespoke arrangements to help them thrive. Our programme focuses on academic, social, and emotional well-being, fostering resilience and independence. With personalised support from dedicated staff, peer mentoring, and specialised interventions, we aim to build the skills and confidence needed to succeed at every stage of their educational journey.

ASN Transition

Students access a place in an Additional Support Needs class via an Admissions Consultation Process which begins in Primary 6.  Pupils who will be joining an Additional Needs class will receive an enhanced transition to ensure pupils get all the support they need to be prepared for life in secondary school. Pupils will be visited at their primary school by one of the ASN staff, they will observe pupils in their class and speak to someone in the school who knows the child well. Relevant information regarding additional needs will be shared between schools. Pupil Profiles will be created for Calderside so that staff will have access to information they need to know about this cohort of pupils. Students will have the opportunity to attend at least 4 visits to Calderside Academy during Primary 7. They will be offered family walk rounds the school during a quiet time to familiarise themselves with the building. They will get to meet their support staff, classmates and will be allocated an older Buddy to help them settle in.  Pupils will complete our differentiated Transition Booklet which will help them prepare. Pupils will follow their visual timetable for 2 days in May. Primary transition meetings will be arranged (usually around May/June) by primaries and will be attended by Calderside ASN staff and families.

Once a child has successfully secured a place within the ASN Dept, parents will be contacted by the relevant depute to arrange an initial meeting.  Transport to and from school is provided where necessary by Inclusion Services.
