Welcome to the Business Education Department

In the Business Education Department pupils can progress from S1 to S6 studying a variety of Business related subjects; Accounting, Administration & IT and Business Management.

A knowledge of business can be useful in many different jobs including roles within the administrative and clerical job family, accountancy, banking and finance, and retail sales and customer services. It will also be useful if you are thinking about setting up your own business or being self-employed in the future.

Our courses provide learners with opportunities to gain an understanding of the dynamic, changing, competitive and economic environment of industry and commerce. It develops skills in communicating and presenting business-related information, in a variety of formats.

The study of Business has many career paths.  Here are just a few:

S1 - S3

S1 & S2 Business

Pupils are introduced to the topics taught in Business and Administration & IT.  They will develop a number of skills throughout the course.  

These include firstly practical skills using the following software in a Business setting:

  • Word Processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Databases
  • Desk Top Publishing
  • Internet
  • E-mail

Throughout the course they will also develop team work and leadership skills through the many varied activities and projects that they will experience.  The topics that are covered in this course are as follows:

  • Needs and Wants
  • Goods and Services
  • Production and Consumption
  • Marketing
  • Digital Marketing
  • Business Entrepreneurs
  • Cash Budgets
  • Business Ethics

Pupils then have the opportunity to progress their learning with the courses that we offer in S3.

Senior Phase

Accounting

Even if you are not planning a career in accounting, this subject helps to improve your personal effectiveness by developing your ability to think logically, work accurately, make decisions and solve problems.  The Course provides learners with the knowledge and skills needed to understand, analyse and interpret financial information in order to make informed judgements and decisions.

We offer this course at the following levels:

Administration and IT

Administration and IT is a practical course that provides you with experience of real-life administration tasks and engaging practical activities relevant to the world of work. There is an emphasis on the development of transferable life skills and the application of these skills.

Business Courses

Studying Business will give you an insight into the factors affecting businesses as they stand today.  These include market research and marketing, operation/production management, human resource management, ethics to name but a few.  Students will also gain an appreciation of the many external factors that affect businesses today and the importance of digital platforms.  The course also looks at the financial aspects of business and helps pupils to gain a knowledge and understanding of the financial decisions and analysis that is undertaken.  This course uses many current business case studies to enhance learning and gives students the opportunity for self-learning, team work approaches and research.

Extra Curricular

We strive to offer our pupils an opportunity to reach their full potential.  To that end we always have high and realistic expectations and are always available for additional support.  Pupils can access this support through our policy of allowing pupils a place to study at lunchtimes if required or to seek us out during these times for assistance.  

We also offer the following:

  • Supported Study evening sessions (Prior to examinations)
  • Easter Study School
  • GLOW classroom – pupils can access their groups by logging into the portal
